Volume 1 studies modern mass communication, at the heart of one of the world's busiest cities.
Does “street photography” still exist? When I think of this genre, Garry Winogrand comes to mind first. Nobody shaped this genre like him. Winogrand documented public life almost manically. Public life? Today that sounds like a promise from the past. In what is perhaps his best book, Richard Sennett describes “the decline and end of public life”. The book's subtitle, The Tyranny of Intimacy, strikes me as a hidden agenda of Peter Langer's new publication. However, his photographs only superficially follow the tradition of "street photography". Langer's protagonists are prisoners of a sphere between public and private. They no longer stroll, they make phone calls. The people, as these pictures show, have changed. Peter Langer captures their fleeting existence like schemes. Before they disappear.
